DESY - Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron

DESY has long-standing experience in the design and operation of accelerators for high energy physics and synchrotron radiation research with presently approximately 2200 synchrotron radiation and roughly 200 Free-Electron Laser (FEL) users, respectively.
DESY-PS is operating DORIS III, FLASH and PETRA III. DORIS III will be shut down at the end of 2012. All three installations are operating independently.
At DORIS III, a total of 15 bending magnet beamlines and 5 wiggler beamlines is available for external users simultaneously. PETRA III is one of the most brilliant X-ray sources world-wide with highly energetic radiation of more than 100 keV. PETRA III achieves the lowest emittance (1.0 nmrad) of all existing high energy storage rings. In full operation 14 independent undulator beams will be available for users of which 9 beamlines with 19 experiments are operated by DESY. FLASH, the FEL in Hamburg, is the first free-electron laser world-wide to produce femtosecond pulses of UV- and soft X-ray radiation with fundamental wavelengths down to almost 4 nm. User experiments are possible at 5 experimental stations. FLASH will be extended by a second FEL (FLASH II) and a second experimental hall. FLASH II is planned to start operation in 2014.
