Elettra - Sincrotrone Trieste

Sincrotrone Trieste has built and operates two SR sources: a FEL (FERMI@Elettra) and a Storage Ring (Elettra).

The new FEL source (FERMI@elettra) started its operation at the end of 2010 and has started offering access to users in 2012. FEL II is presently under fine tuning.

It is one of the two existing installations of this kind in Europe, the other one being FLASH in Hamburg. With respect to FLASH, FERMI@elettra offers complementary characteristics as, after thorough consultation with the future user community, it was decided to go for a novel operational scheme (seeding) which allows complete control and reproducibility of the photon beam characteristics such as wavelength and intensity. Moreover, FERMI@elettra allows for the control of the photon beam polarization.
The storage ring: After a major upgrade, the storage ring is routinely operated since May 2010 in top-up mode at energies of 2.0 and 2.4 GeV. Users have access to 23 operating beamlines (15 fed by insertion devices and 8 by bending magnets) at the project start. During the project, 3 additional beamlines, presently under construction will become available. Within this project, access will be offered to 22 of the existing beamlines and to 2 of the beamlines under construction. The beamlines at Elettra cover a wide variety of fields including, but not limited to, physics, chemistry, material science, nanotechnology, biology, medicine, environmental science, micro and nanofabrication.
